Wear it like a man

Formal groom attire

The formal Groom

  • A tuxedo is formal wear at its best. We’re talking 007 here: Suave and sophisticated.

  • The tux is worn at black-tie dos and is best for evening and winter weddings, ones with a modern, urban edge or if the theme is something like The Great Gatsby.

  • Can’t decide whether to buy or to rent a tux? Basically, it comes down to your budget and whether or not you’ll wear it again.

  • These days, it is often suggested that grooms rather buy a dark suit that can be worn again at formal and smart casual occasions. You could also purchase a combination of the two: Many grooms have bespoke suits made with tux elements on them, such as contrasting lapels and covered buttons. This way they have a dual-purpose wardrobe staple that lasts them for years.

  • If you buy a formal suit with tux touches it must be black (or midnight blue); wear it with a white shirt and a black tie or bow tie.

  • A classic white dress shirt, French cuffs and a real bow tie are essential if you are wearing a tux; learn how to tie one.

  • Black leather brogues or loafers with a glossy finish will stand you in good stead, so get yourself a quality pair (no boots allowed).

  • Stay (far) away from cummerbunds, cravats, white socks and garish waistcoats. Patterned or brightly coloured bow ties are absolute no-no’s.
